Broad Rally: KOSPI +5.12%, KOSDAQ +1.79% — Korea Close & Tomorrow Outlook 26/05/05

Hey, Dongchun here.

Here is how the Korean market closed today.

DONGCHUN'S TAKE

The only thing that matters today is foreign investors going all-in on Korean memory — 3.02 trillion KRW into KOSPI, 1.7 trillion KRW into SK Hynix alone, against retail dumping 4.79 trillion KRW. This matters because it confirms US big tech's 2026 capex upgrades — explicitly citing memory pricing — translated into a single-day allocation shock, not a slow rotation. Watch tonight's AMD data-center print and the 5/6 SK Hynix opening tick: if AMD beats and Hynix gaps above 1,447,000 won, the 7,000 KOSPI trigger fires immediately.

1. Korea Market Close

KOSPI closed at a record 6,936.99 (+338.12pt, +5.12%) and KOSDAQ at 1,213.74 (+21.39pt, +1.79%), leaving KOSPI just 63 points from the psychological 7,000 line. The single-session 5.12% jump is among the largest 2026 moves and unwound the entire downside scenario from yesterday's US risk-off pivot.

The dominant driver was foreign concentration into Korean memory after US big tech raised 2026 capex guidance and explicitly cited memory pricing as a trigger. SK Hynix +12.52% to 1,447,000 won crossed 1,031 trillion KRW market cap, becoming the second Korean firm in the 1,000-trillion club after Samsung Electronics. Samsung Electronics +5.44% to 232,500 won also rallied despite ongoing union strike risk.

Breadth was narrower than the index headline suggests — KOSDAQ at +1.79% lagged KOSPI by 333bps, indicating large-cap concentration. VIX printed 17.96 (-1.80%), well below the 20 panic line, signaling the rally rode confidence rather than capitulation cover. Korean markets are closed Tuesday 5/5 for Children's Day; reopen is Wednesday 5/6.

2. Foreign Flow Analysis

Foreigners net-bought KOSPI +3,018 B KRW with the largest single-stock allocation going to SK Hynix at +1,703 B KRW. The single-day total was the second-largest since October 2, 2025 (+3,127 B KRW), confirming this was an allocation event rather than a rotation. Samsung Electronics and its preferred shares filled out the foreign top buys.

Institutions added KOSPI +1,935 B KRW alongside foreigners but trimmed -75 B KRW on KOSDAQ. Retail investors dumped a record KOSPI -4,793 B KRW and KOSDAQ -522 B KRW into the rally — the textbook foreign-buys, retail-sells signature of a structural re-rating rather than a short squeeze.

The combined pattern argues foreigners remain the primary swing factor for 5/6. With US Nasdaq futures at +0.42% overnight and AMD reporting after tonight's close, foreign continuation flow into Samsung Electronics in the first five minutes of 5/6 trade is the cleanest leading indicator for KOSPI 7,000.

3. Sector Breakdown

The dominant theme was Korean memory leadership tied to US big tech 2026 capex upgrades that explicitly cited memory pricing. Korean semiconductor 2026 operating profit consensus has been revised up roughly 66% over the past month, providing the fundamental anchor for the foreign concentration.

Top gaining sector was semis — SK Hynix (000660) +12.52% and Samsung Electronics (005930) +5.44%. Autos and batteries followed — Hyundai Motor (005380) +1.51% and LG Energy Solution (373220) +2.50%. KOSDAQ saw EcoPro BM (247540) +4.61% and Rainbow Robotics (277810) +3.16% extend the secondary growth bid.

Lagging sectors were internet platforms — NAVER (035420) -0.95% and Kakao (035720) -0.42% as positioning unwound ahead of Kakao's 5/7 Q1 earnings. Materials and chemicals also rallied, suggesting the breadth extended beyond AI hardware into deep-cyclical names that had been laggards.

ORCL +4.92% rallied as Atlassian raised annual guidance and Twilio beat Q1 revenue, lifting the broader software complex. COIN +6.14% rallied with Bitcoin above $80,000 and confirmed bipartisan CLARITY Act markup for May.

BMNR +4.16% benefited from triple positive — NYSE main-board uplisting, 5.18M ETH ($10.2B) holdings disclosure, and buyback authorization expanded from $1B to $4B with annualized staking revenue at $297M. ASTS -3.47% extended weakness on CEO compensation disclosures confirming the BlueBird 7 satellite milestone miss.

5. Earnings Watch

Tonight's AMD print after the close is the single biggest near-term catalyst for Korean memory after foreigners poured 1.7 trillion KRW into SK Hynix in one session.

CompanyTime (ET)Consensus EPSRevenue ConsensusWatch For
AMDAfter close$1.27-$1.29$9.84B-$9.86BData center revenue $5.56B (+51.5% YoY), MI300X traction, OpenAI deal cadence
Super Micro (SMCI)After close$0.60-$0.63+169% YoYAI server rally reset, options pricing ±10% move

AMD data-center revenue at $5.56B consensus represents +51.5% YoY growth — a beat with raised guide reaffirms the AI infrastructure capex narrative that drove today's foreign concentration into SK Hynix. SMCI's +169% YoY revenue consensus is the secondary AI-server checkpoint after this morning's rally extension.

Korea read-through for 5/6 is concentrated in SK Hynix (000660) and Samsung Electronics (005930). Hanmi Semiconductor and other HBM-tier suppliers also key off AMD data-center commentary. The 5/7 Korean cluster (Kakao, Celltrion, LG, HD Korea Shipbuilding, HD Hyundai Heavy) drops a day later and dictates rotational flow off the AMD reaction.

6. Tomorrow's Korea Open

Korean markets are closed Tuesday 5/5 for Children's Day; reopen is Wednesday 5/6. US overnight futures recovered with S&P at 7,251.25 (+0.29%), Nasdaq at 27,894.00 (+0.42%), and Dow at 49,209.00 (+0.26%) — implying a modest gap-up bias for the 5/6 KOSPI open into a record close.

The decisive catalyst tonight is AMD's Q1 2026 print (consensus EPS $1.27-$1.29, revenue $9.84-$9.86B, data-center revenue $5.56B at +51.5% YoY). An AMD beat with raised data-center guidance feeds directly into SK Hynix (000660) HBM allocation reads, while a miss could trigger profit-taking against the 1,447,000 won close. Super Micro (SMCI) reports the same evening with +169% YoY revenue consensus.

Macro-wise, Brent crude pulled back to $113.44 (-0.87%) and WTI to $104.03 (-2.25%), suggesting the Hormuz peak inflation rerating is plateauing for now. VIX at 17.96 sits comfortably below the 20 line. The 10-year US yield at 4.45% (+1.55%) remains the structural watchpoint if oil reignites.

ScenarioTrigger ConditionKOSPI Target
BullAMD data-center beat with raised guide, foreign continuation buying7,000 breakout test
NeutralAMD in-line, futures hold +0.2% to +0.3%6,900-7,000 range
BearAMD data-center miss with conservative guide, foreign profit-taking6,800 support test

Base case for 5/6 is a modest gap-up with sector rotation favoring memory continuation if AMD cooperates, otherwise a profit-taking drift in semis with rotation into refining and shipbuilding. International readers can track the iShares MSCI South Korea ETF (EWY) or Samsung Electronics GDR for clean access.

DONGCHUN'S WRAP

Foreigners drew the line at 1,000 trillion won market cap and 1.7 trillion won single-stock buying — the question for 5/6 is whether the same conviction holds when the same names are 12% more expensive.

That's the PM breakdown for May 05. Trade safe.
